The Delanos were a prominent Massachusetts family of merchants and ship owners. Benjamin Delano (1778-1868) and his brother Joshua Delano (1768-1800) were ship owners and merchants from Kingston, Massachusetts. Joshua Delano was a ship captain and Benjamin Delano was a merchant conducting family business from Kingston. Joshua Delano died in Havana, Cuba, on a voyage there in 1800. In 1803, Benjamin Delano and his brother-in-law, ship captain Peter Winsor, built a storehouse and Delano’s Wharf located in the Rocky Nook section of Kingston, which still stands today. Benjamin Delano married Susanna Holmes in 1803 and together they had nine children including Joshua Delano (1809-1903) who worked on his father’s vessels at an early age. Joshua Delano would eventually became a partner with his father in Benjamin Delano & Son. The Delano family owned or operated one of the largest fleets of ships in Kingston, Mass.
