Catholics and American Colonization - 1975

Orcutt, John. AFRICAN COLONIZATION: AN ADDRESS DELIVERED BEFORE THE AMERICAN COLONIZATION SOCIETY, IN WASHINGTON,D.C., JANUARY 19, 1875. BY REV. JOHN ORCUTT, D.D. OF NEW YORK. 22 pgs. Also laid in is Orcutt's 1874 broadside solicitation urging support for Liberia via contributions to the Society, which "has planted a Christian Commonwealth upon the coast of benighted Africa. Remarkably, after the Reconstruction Amendments had rendered Negroes citizens of the United States, with all the rights and privileges pertaining thereto, the American Colonization Society marched on, helping benighted Africa emerge from "the midnight darkness of heathenism". The work of the Society is rendered essential by the competing efforts of "Roman-catholics to get a foothold there for centuries." Both the booklet which is in printed wrappers and stitched and the broadside are in vg cond.
