JENNIE CHAMBERS as a small girl witnessed John Brown’s raid on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. She wrote in extraordinary detail about the incident and included names of people involved, wounded, killed and many details of the raid. Her article was originally published in Harpers Magazine in 1902.

Young Jennie was a heroine, an amateur artist and author whose collections, including day-books, letters and other papers relating to her family are housed at Duke University.
