TEMPERANCE AND EDUCATION
(Temperance Newspaper) THE FOUNTAIN. DEVOTED TO TEMPERANCE, EDUCATION AND GENERAL MISCELLANY. Chillicothe, Ohio. Vol 1 - March 15, 1847 - No. 4. pgs. 25 -32. Complete single issue. Printed by Ely and Allen and editied by an Association of Gentlemen. The life span of THE FOUNTAIN apparently was for part of 1847 and 1848. An interesting newspaper with a front page story titled
“All Have Suffered” and prints the remarks of a man who gave testimony before a Portland, Maine Licensing Board on a case in which the defendant violated the law of the state in selling spiritous liquors as a beverage. The editors’ rationale for reprinting the remarks were explained with this statement: “And, if we apprehend that if a careful examination was mad, the history of every town and city in the land, where intoxicating drinks have been sold for years, would show similar results of the use of this water of death!” The other front-page story is titled “Legislating on the Sale of Ardent Spirits”. The paper lists the various regional divisions of the Sons of Temperance and gives the place and date of their meetings. Two other articles are titled “Temperance and Politics” and “Our Obligations in Regard to Intemperance”. Page 32 has an index of the contents of the first three issues (pages 1-24) of The Fountain
