The Famine In Kansas
"DROVE HIS CATTLE NINE DAYS WITH WORN OUT SHOES."
The New York Kansas Relief Committee. THE FAMINE IN KANSAS. New York. Jan. 30, 1861. 4pp. Single sheet folded to form two leaves. Chips and separations nicely repaired. Some words mildly affected. Minor ex library stamp from 1940. Vg cond. Giving strong testimonial to the famine occurring in the state of Kansas at the time, and the poverty that ensued as a result. There are different accounts of individual peoples’ experiences. One tells a story of a young man who drove his cattle for nine days with worn out shoes. Evidently he had gotten frostbite and left
bloody footprints. When he was offered a pair, he declined and said there were others who needed them more. The piece was published for the purpose of appealing to the people of the east coast to donate to the cause of aiding the famine in Kansas. Donations of money, clothing, blankets, boots and other shoes were accepted. OCLC locates only two copies; one at Yale, the other at Harvard.
