THE MICHIGAN STOVE COMPANY
THE MICHIGAN STOVE COMPANY. Largest Makers of Stoves and Ranges in the World. 1900. 1st. (2), 103, (3). Hard cover. Hundreds of woodcut engraved and photo text illustrations and plates throughout. An extremely important and lavish Michigan Stove Co. catalog. This catalog introduced the stove with "Aluminized" oven doors and racks marketed as "the brightest and cleanest ovens ever invented." The aluminum coating also ensured that there was more even heat distribution, and also introduced clean smooth surfaces for cooks and kitchen staff. The catalog features stoves fueled by hard or soft coal, or wood fire. Besides cooking ranges it features and entire line-up of heating systems for cottages, homes and businesses. The Michigan Stove Company was founded by Jeremiah Dyer (1838-1920) known as the stove king who first apprenticed and worked with Geary and Russel, before J.Dwyer and Co. in 1861 with his brother James making the first stove in Michigan. After leaving the company for health reasons, he moved back and founded Michigan Stove Co. in 1871 with his brother and investors. He also developed the Eureka Iron Works in Wyandotte, Michigan and later the Peninsular Stove Co. See: Garland Stove, Encyclopedia of Detroit, Detroit Historical Society. The front free end-paper is chipped and partially detached. Interior is in excellent condition.
